What is the Character in Action (CIA)?
The Character in Action Team consists of teachers ranging from Kindergarten to Sixth Grades. The team is dedicated to creating a positive environment for the students at the Tri Valley Elementary School.
The Character in Action Team (CIA) was first formed to help the District implement the Olweus Bullying PRevention Program in 2013. With this program, the team helped train teachers in the implementation of weekly class meetings. Within these meetings, classroom teachers are able to teach student lessons centered around social skills and coping with conflict. Students learn how to identify the differences between bullying and conflict and how to handle situations by being a positive bystander.
To continue this amazing work, the Character in Action Team implements initiatives center around character education. Character traits, such as Respect and Perseverance, are assigned to each month starting in October each year. At the beginning of each month, flyers go home with students explaining the new trait and suggestions on how to hold conversations with the family about the trait. Teachers are able to utilize class meeting time to teach the trait each month. At the end of the month, Inspiration Awards are given to students who exemplify the traits being taught.
During the 2017-2018 school year, the Character in Action team invited the Rachel's Challenge organization to Tri Valley Central School District. Rachel's Challenge is a program created by the family and friends of Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. The program is devoted to empowering students to spread kindness in the world. Students in Kindergarten through Twelfth grades participated in assemblies throughout the morning and then select groups participated in the Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club training. FOR Clubs were created as a result of this program and are dedicated to continue Rachel's mission to spread kindness.
Coming up this year, the Character in Action Team will be continuing the work around character traits and spreading kindness to prevent bullying. More information will come explaining Rachel's Challenge coming back to Tri Valley and the participation in Unity Day.
