Country Pumpkins place fourth in Battle of the Books Regional Championship

Five teens representing the Daniel Pierce Library and Tri-Valley Secondary School finished in fourth place in the annual Ramapo Catskill Library System’s Teen Battle of the Books competition, held  Sept. 8 at Orange County Community College.

Competing against a field of 18 teams from around the Hudson Valley, the “Country Pumpkins” had some tough matches in a spirited tournament. This year’s team was comprised of Lorna Bragg, Robert Denman, Brandon Huggler, Jasmine Irwin, Reanna McGregor, Samantha Morgan and Katelyn Sauer.

The contest pits teams in knowledge of the setting, plot, character, theme and dialogue for eight highly-acclaimed young adult books: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams; The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas; I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore; Illegal by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin; The Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse; Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli; Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk, and The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater.

To prepare for the September event, team members read the books and met for discussion and practice throughout the summer with coaches Matt Haynes, Tri-Valley ELA teacher, and Geri Neumann, Daniel Pierce's Youth Services Librarian.

We’re very proud of these young adults. Way to go, Country Pumpkins!
