Battle of the Books Winners!!

Six young women and one young man, representing the Daniel Pierce Library and students at Tri-Valley Secondary School, were undefeated in the annual Ramapo Catskill Library System’s Teen Battle of the Books competition, on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Orange County Community College. Runners-up included Middletown Thrall Library (Team 2), finishing in second place, and Nanuet Public Library, finishing in third place.

Competing against a field of seventeen other teams from around the Hudson Valley, the “Country Pumpkins” progressed through a spirited tournament to emerge victorious for the fifth time in five years, the only team to ever win the title more than once. This year’s team was comprised of defending champions Kira Ambrosi, Lorna Bragg, Robert Denman, Juliette Eddings, Reanna McGregor, and Samantha Morgan, plus new team member Jasmine Irwin.

The contest pits teams in knowledge of the setting, plot, character, theme, and dialogue for eight highly-acclaimed young adult books: Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, Something in Between by Melissa de la Cruz, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, Angus, Thongs & Full-Front Snogging by Louise Rennison, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, and Undefeated by Steve Sheinkin.

To prepare for the September event, the seven team members not only read the books, but also met for discussion and practice throughout the summer with coaches Matt Haynes, Tri-Valley ELA teacher, and Geri Neumann, Daniel Pierce Library Youth Services Librarian.

We’re very proud of the accomplishments of these young adults. Way to go, Country Pumpkins!
